“At your current workplace, have you or your co-workers experienced retaliation by management or HR after reporting an incident?” This is the latest survey question we asked our users. A total of 4,386 people responded and 41.40 percent replied “Yes.” That’s close to half of our survey participants who claim that leaders backlashed when an incident was reported.

Earlier this year, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) released a report of the 84,254 charges of workplace discrimination that it received in fiscal year 2017. Retaliation was the number one charge with 41,097 cases — 48.78 percent of the total charges that year. This percentage almost mirrors the result from our own survey.

We also examined the survey data by company, those with at least 50 employee responses. We found that Airbnb tops our retaliation list with 56.45 percent. Facebook and LinkedIn rank the lowest with percentages below 30 percent. An additional takeaway: Airbnb, eBay, Intel, Amazon, Microsoft, and Intuit have retaliation percentages that are higher than our own survey average.
