44% of Techies Feel Their Political Views Not Welcome at Work

The political opinions of Silicon Valley and those in the tech industry has been a hot topic lately. That’s why we decided to survey our community of tech employees about this. What we found was quite interesting.

We asked them two questions:

1.) Is your company accepting of diverse political opinions?  Participants could answer with ‘Yes’ or ‘No’  and a total of 4,650 answered this survey question.

2.) What is your political leaning? Participants could answer with ‘Liberal,’ ‘Conservative’ or ‘Moderate.’ A total of 3,834 of the 4,650 who answered the first question, answered this second question.

Here’s what we found:

  • Overall, 56.2% answered with ‘Yes,’ with 43.8% answered with ‘No.’
  • A total of 1,511 identified as ‘Liberal,’ with 70.9% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 1,474 identified as ‘Moderate,’ with 52.0% answered with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 849 identified as ‘Conservative,’ with 27.1% answered with ‘Yes.’

We also took a look at the results broken down by companies with at least 100 employee responses. This included responses from employees at Apple, Google, Uber, Facebook, Microsoft, and Amazon. Here’s what we found:

Apple

  • Overall, 60.4% answered with ‘Yes,’ versus 39.6% answering with ‘No.’
  • A total of 38 identified as ‘Liberal,’ with 84.2% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 23 identified as ‘Moderate,’ with 52.0% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 25 identified as ‘Conservative,’ with 26.1% answering with ‘Yes.’

 

Uber

  • Overall, 49.6% answered with ‘Yes’ versus 50.3% answering with ‘No.’
  • A total of 31 identified as ‘Liberal,’ with 67.7% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 53 identified as ‘Moderate,’ with 45.3% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 24 identified as ‘Conservative,’ with 20.8% answering with ‘Yes.’

Microsoft

  • Overall, 47.4% answered with ‘Yes’ versus 52.6% answering with ‘No.’
  • A total of 121 identified as ‘Liberal,’ with 70.0% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 176 identified as ‘Moderate,’ with 42.6% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 152 identified as ‘Conservative,’ with 17.8% answering with ‘Yes.’

Amazon

  • Overall, 59.3% answered with ‘Yes’ versus 40.7% answering with ‘No.’
  • A total of 136 identified as ‘Liberal,’ with 71.3% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 129 identified as ‘Moderate,’ with 61.2% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 77 identified as ‘Conservative,’ with 27.3% answering with ‘Yes.’

Google

  • Overall, 39.3% answered with ‘Yes’ versus 60.7% answering with ‘No.’
  • A total of 73 identified as ‘Liberal,’ with 60.3% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 99 identified as ‘Moderate,’ with 30.3% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 43 identified as ‘Conservative,’ with 11.6% answering with ‘Yes.’

Facebook

  • Overall, 41.2% answered with ‘Yes’ versus 58.8% answering with ‘No.’
  • A total of 59 identified as ‘Liberal,’ with 54.2% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 84 identified as ‘Moderate,’ with 33.3% answering with ‘Yes.’
  • A total of 38 identified as ‘Conservative,’ with 26.3% answering with ‘Yes.’

More survey details:

The survey ran from October 17 through October 25, 2018, and users could only answer once.
